This Year In Movies, And A Look Ahead Into 2024

‎ ‎ ‎ Well, here we are- drunkenly staring down the barrel of 2024. While January is a time for just that- drunkenly staring down the barrel of the new year- it is also a time for reflection. A time to pause the show, and say, “Wait, what just happened?” After answering that question, you can proceed to look into the future. So that’s a nice little analogical introduction to this article, which will be reflecting on Hollywood in 2023, and analyzing Hollywood in 2024.

‎ ‎ ‎ 2023: The Remedy For Our Pain︱2023 finally revealed something fans have known for a long time. It (hopefully) showed executives that overblown movies that sacrifice writing for graphics, laughs, “The Message” (an obnoxiously forced theme), and labyrinthine plots don’t make money. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, The Little Mermaid, Napoleon, The Flash, Indiana Jones and The Dial Of Destiny, and more all failed due to these issues. Smaller, more grounded, slice-of-life films were the successful ones. These were movies that just wanted to tell a good story. These included The Holdovers, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Creed 3. Not a lot, true, but Barbie and Oppenheimer brought in about 2 billion dollars (worldwide) combined. That could get executives talking.
